Playoff roundup: Gatesville softball wins two close games to advance past Levelland; Rosebud-Lott softball also into regional finals; R-L baseball eliminated

WICHITA FALLS - Gatesville’s school-record season isn’t over yet.

After dropping Game 1 to Levelland on Friday, the Lady Hornets rallied on Saturday for a 3-2 victory in eight innings, then prevailed 2-0 to win their Class 3A Region I semifinal playoff series.

Gatesville (30-9) advanced to the Region I final for the first time and will face Fredericksburg next week at a place and time to be determined.

In the first game, the Lady Hornets trailed 2-1 in the sixth inning before Emily Leib doubled home Becca Augeri to tie the game at 2. In the eighth, Megan Chartier singled, stole second and eventually scored the winning run on a wild pitch to force Game 3.

“Once we scored in the sixth inning, the momentum changed,” Gatesville coach Michelle Bartch said. “The whole energy changed. There’s always a turning point in the game and we were able to take control.”

Chartier led off the final game with a single, stole second, Augeri moved her to third and she scored on Kylie Nichols’ hit. In the fifth, Chartier singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home on a delayed steal.

Rosebud-Lott softball blasts Corrigan-Camden, reaches 2A-III title round

MADISONVILLE - The Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars rolled to the Class 2A Region III final with an 8-2 win over Corrigan-Camden on Saturday.

“They weren’t as tough as what we had been seeing,” Rosebud-Lott coach Keele Crouch said.

Victoria Conners (19-5) allowed just two hits in the win, with Corrigan-Camden using a walk, hit by pitch and a hit to score their lone runs.

But the Cougars (21-6) offense was the story of the game, pounding out 17 hits, including two doubles by Ellen Reid and one each for Skylar Savage, Julie Thornton and Conners.

“It’s nice to get those hits,” Crouch added. “I think that helps build the girls’ confidence.”

The Lady Cougars will advance to face Elysian Fields at a time and place to be determined next weekend.

Although Elysian Fields has a strong recent playoff history, Crouch believes her team has the capability to advance, especially because her team has already defeated Big Sandy Harmony, which won District 18-2A, the same district that Elysian Fields hails from.

“I told the girls that they have the ability to beat them,” she said. “We just have to get it done. Right now it’s real exciting here and these girls have already got Rosebud-Lott as far as it’s ever been in softball.”

Rosebud-Lott baseball eliminated by No. 7 Harleton

ATHENS - The Rosebud-Lott Cougars’ baseball season came to an end on Saturday with a 5-1 loss to No. 7 Harleton in a Class 2A Region III quarterfinal contest. Harleton won Game 1 10-4 on Thursday to sweep the best-of-three series.

On Saturday, coach Chema Chavez said his Cougars just couldn’t come up with timely hitting against the Wildcats.

“They got the timely hitting and we didn’t,” Chavez said. “We had opportunities but couldn’t get it done.”

The Wildcats had only one extra-base hit but were able to score in four innings by moving around their leadoff hitter.

“They hit the ball when they needed to,” Chavez said. “When the leadoff hitter gets on base, he’s going to score 80 percent of the time. Today it was 100 percent. Early walks killed us.”

The Cougars (18-8) put runners on second and third in the fourth and sixth innings but were unable to score in either. The Wildcat defense turned a double play on a squeeze in the fourth and worked out of the jam again in the sixth.
