Another winning performance

Rogers High School’s one-act play “Ghetto” won the UIL Class 2A state championship Wednesday at the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Colton Coots was named Best Actor in the state and Christina Kirby was named Best Actress. Coots was also named the Samuel French or outstanding performance award winner.

Aaron Martin, Bronc Rice and Andrew Kotrla were named to the All-Star Cast. Devon Zamora was named to the honorable mention All-Star Cast.

“I’m kind of speechless,” Miss Kirby said. “I didn’t feel like we were competing while we were out there. We were just performing it for the audience.”

Miss Kirby is a senior and performed as Hayyah in the play.

Senior Ben Baecker said the performance “couldn’t have gone any better.”

Baecker performed as Weiskopf and other roles.

When asked the question of what it felt like to win the state championship at the end of his senior year, Baecker simply said it was “quite something.”

Robert Chappell, Rogers High School principal, said the win was built on the strong leadership of the seniors.

“We had seven seniors who had a key role in leadership and bringing up the other kids in the program,” he said.

Rogers won the state contest in 2002, 2005 and 2008, placed second in 2004 and was a finalist in 2003.

Other cast members are Nancy Macha, Garrett Rice, Rachel Hattemer, Jeff Kuhn, Reed Chappell, Tyler Welsh, Tyler Stillwell and Seth Martin.

Crew members are Tanner Green, Chad Marek, Zoey Ralston and Stephanie Vanicek. Alternates are Justin Flores, Jacolby Brown, Sam Vanicek and Koby Dudley. Directors are Joshua and Abbie Harriman.
