Former Belton, Texas star Taylor signs with CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - After playing just one game with the Rio Grande Dorados of the arenafootball2 league, former Belton and University of Texas star Ramonce Taylor is heading north for the summer.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League announced Thursday that they signed Taylor. Terms of the contract were not released.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement to bring in an outstanding athlete with a versatile skill set to play running back or receiver,” Blue Bombers coach Mike Kelly said. “He has also proven to be a successful return man and will add to the competitiveness of this camp.”

Taylor played in the Dorados’ season opener and caught three passes for 31 yards. After that, Taylor left the team to try out for the Blue Bombers.

The Blue Bombers season begins June 17.

The multi-talented Belton product rushed for school records of 4,010 yards and 62 touchdowns during a three-year career with the Tigers before signing a scholarship with Texas.

In his second season with the Longhorns, he totaled a team-high 1,219 all-purpose yards and scored 15 TDs, including one in Texas’ national championship victory over Southern California in the Rose Bowl in January of 2006.

But academic issues and an arrest in May 2006 for possession of marijuana ended Taylor’s days in Austin. He enrolled at NAIA Texas College but was never cleared to play. He pleaded guilty to the marijuana charge in September ’06 and was sentenced to five months in state jail early last year for probation violations.
