Academy junior wins gold

Mitch Green/Telegram
Academy junior runner Emily Koenig, No. 2095 above, produced a performance to remember Friday at the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Meet in Austin.

She won the gold medal in the Class 2A girls 3,200 meters in 11 minutes, 20.01 seconds - more than 26 seconds ahead of runner-up Courtney Haass of Geronimo Navarro. Koenig also placed fifth in the 800.

Holland sophomore Blair Severson delivered another gold for the area, clearing 14 feet, 3 inches to win the Class A boys pole vault in his first state appearance. Severson’s father, Doug, earned a pole vault bronze in 1982 and his oldest brother, Blake, also vaulted at state in 2001.

Meanwhile, Bartlett senior Ted Crews added a silver medal in the Class A boys discus to the bronze he took home from state last year. Crews is scheduled to compete in the shot put today.

Set to compete today in the 5A ranks are Temple jumpers Daniel Carr, Tevin Reese and Chris Randle, Belton pole vaulter Morgan Toone and a slew of Killeen Ellison athletes. Cameron Yoe’s Brook Brashear and Rockdale’s Krysten Brooks will run 3A girls hurdles races. Stories, Page 1C. (Mitch Green/Telegram)
