The Lock-Up is a much anticipated fundraising event in which business and community leaders go “behind bars” to raise money for MDA. The “jailbirds” might be “locked-up,” but this is no ordinary penitentiary.
On the day of the Lock-Up, a volunteer “posse” will arrest participants and escort them to the Hilton. Upon arrival participants will have their mug shots taken and will begin raising their $1,600 bail, the price of sending two campers to MDA Summer Camp.
Fire Chief Lonzo Wallace is the celebrity judge for the event and will give the jailbirds their fate, which is usually a fate anyone would be glad to accept. Olive Garden is sponsoring lunch for participants and Healing Hands Massage is providing chair massages for jailbirds who send a kid to camp. Jailbirds who raise bail will be invited to a check presentation on the local broadcast of the MDA Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, which will be broadcast 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on KWTX Channel 10.
MDA provides programs of research, services and health education for the 43 muscle diseases. For more on the Telethon or Lock-Up, visit www.MDA.org or e-mail Hope Geer at hgeer@mdausa.org.
