School's out!

Jacob Walling, 10, of Pirtle Elementary plays Wave Bingo on Monday with his friends and campmates at Camp Heatwave at the Wilson Recreation Center in Temple. Camp Heatwave is an adventure camp, says camp coordinator Robert “Peanut” Henderson. “We have taken what every other camp is doing, in the state of Texas, and basically, that is what we are doing,” Henderson said. “This summer, these kids are going to be able to experience archery, canoeing, scuba diving — we are going to state parks and will teach outdoor living skills and take them on different trails.” Camp Heatwave started in 2005 when it won the Lonestar programming award and has grown from 30 campers to more than 200. “We keep it at that because we don’t want to take away from the friendship and atmosphere. Sometimes camps get too big and campers become a number. We don’t do that,” Henderson said. “It’s very structured, but our goal at the end of the day is to send them home tired.” Clint Bittenbinder/Telegram
