Robert E. Devine

MAQUOKETEA, IOWA — A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert E. “Bob” Devine, 81, of Temple, formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Denver, Iowa, will be 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Preston, Iowa.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Preston, Iowa, with military honors.

Mr. Devine died Saturday, June 6, in a Temple nursing home.

He was born on Jan. 27, 1928, to Glenn and Marian Kerr Devine in Fairfield, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa City High in 1946. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He attended the University of Iowa and married Mary Black on Nov. 4, 1950, in Preston, Iowa.

He worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 35 years, (except for four years as a trust officer for Jackson State Bank in the 70s) the last nine years as district manager. In the later years in Denver he taught junior golf lessons. While living in Maquoketa he was instrumental in the development of the Maquoketa Community Youth Center and served as a director on the school board of the Maquoketa Community Schools. He was active in Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Maquoketa Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years of Temple; two sons, Thomas Devine of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Steven Devine of Yankton, S.D.; six daughters, Susan Keeney of Maple Grove, Minn., Barbara Thomsen of Port Byron, Ill., Kathleen Broadwater of Temple, Carol Goebel of Denver, Iowa, Jeanne Schmidt of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Ruth Olson of Richmond; a brother, Jim Devine of Homestead, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Edwin Black Scholarship Fund, c/o Clinton National Bank, P.O. Box 249, Preston, Iowa 52069, or to Cornerstone Gardens, 763 Marlandwood Road, Temple, 76502.

The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service in Preston.

Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
