More than 200 boys and girls ages 8-14 participated in the sixth annual Day of Champions, sponsored by Ralph Wilson Youth Clubs. Each child received instruction from area coaches in two of an available seven sports, along with breakfast, lunch, a Bible and a T-shirt - all for $10.
Said Day of Champions director Mark Jermstad: “Really, it’s about Jesus, and it’s about sports."
Former Temple and Mary Hardin-Baylor football standout Derrick Williams was eager to volunteer his services for the camp.
"Just giving back to the community, man," he said. "The community gave a lot to me, so I figured that now is my time to give back to the community."
Temple College softball coach Larry Hennig was another Day of Champions instructor.
"For me I enjoy it because it puts everything in the right place. It's a way to give back to the community," he said. "At the end of the day, I never have won a softball game that made me feel like I feel after this thing is over with.
"After seeing the kids come through here and the excitement and the fun that they have, that's why I keep doing it."
