Community colleges push green careers

Area community colleges are joining forces to develop programs that promote emerging green economy careers and attract stimulus dollars to the region.

On Thursday, Dr. Glenda Barron, Temple College president, and Dr. Danette Toone, TC vice president for academic and community initiatives, will be in Austin with representatives from Dallas County Community College District, Austin Community College, Texas State Technical College System and Alamo Colleges to announce the initiative.

The multiple institute collaboration will include Temple College’s Renewable Energy Training Institute at Taylor.

“We’re looking at an I-35 corridor of green training for stimulus dollars and the different ways we can partner,” Toone said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for us.”

The announcement by will be made at noon at the Texas Association of Community Colleges, 1304 San Antonio St., Austin.

The Legislature has committed $800,000 to get the project started, Toone said.
