Salado's Coffey paces seven area players on TSWA all-state softball squads

Salado’s Lindsey Coffey was a Class 2A first-team selection on the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Softball Team released Saturday, and six other area players were honored as well.

Salado’s senior first baseman was the lone first-team pick from the area, while Rosebud-Lott’s Skylar Savage was a third-team selection and Bruceville-Eddy’s Arianna Rodriguez and Moody’s Chelcee Hall received honorable mentions in 2A.

In 3A, Cameron Yoe’s Kelsey De La Rosa was voted to the second team, and Gatesville’s Megan Chartier and Rockdale’s Kassie Roddam earned honorable mention selections.

Coffey led the area with a .624 batting average that included 11 doubles, and she scored 38 runs. Those numbers and her .652 on-base percentage were key in the Lady Eagles’ third-place finish in District 25-2A.

Savage’s speed and ability to score were big reasons Rosebud-Lott advanced to the Class 2A Region III final despite not having a senior on the team. Second baseman Savage batted .452 and led the area with 47 runs. She also had 11 doubles, four triples and 32 stolen bases.

Rodriguez’s 16-5 pitching record, 225 strikeouts and area-best 0.79 earned-run average helped Bruceville-Eddy claim the 16-2A championship. The multi-sport star struck out all 21 batters in a perfect game against McGregor.

While Rodriguez was selected as a pitcher, her work at the plate also stood out as she hit .508 and had four home runs, three triples and 11 doubles.

Moody third baseman Hall batted .486 with 16 steals.

While the Lady Yoe failed to make the playoffs from a highly competitive 24-3A, De La Rosa was a bright spot for the team. The senior outfielder finished her career as the district MVP and batted .413 with 31 RBI and five triples.

Gatesville’s Chartier was another speed demon, leading the area with 55 stolen bases to complement her .452 batting average and 44 runs. Chartier’s work helped the Lady Hornets make their first trip to the state softball tournament, where they lost to eventual state champion Needville 2-1.
