Mr. Whittenberger died Tuesday, June 30, in a Killeen hospital.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1934, to Orville R. Whittenberger and Margaret Stillwagon Whittenberger in Youngstown, Ohio. He married Nancy L. Swearingen on April 26, 1958, in Youngstown. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army retiring with the rank of master sergeant His decorations include the National Defense Service medal; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal; the Vietnam Service medal with 3 bronze service stars; the Meritorious Unit Citation with 2 oak leaf clusters; the Army Commendation medal; the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm; the Good Conduct medal, clasp bronze 5 loops; and the Expert (rifle) medal. He worked in Civil Service as a computer programmer.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years of Copperas Cove; a daughter, Susan Whittenberger of Fort Worth; and two sisters, Evelyn Reiss of Pickerington, Ohio and Elaine DeShields of Salem, Ohio.
Sheppard Funeral Home in Copperas Cove is in charge of arrangements.
