Wet weather shakes up area sports schedule

Strong thunderstorms early Friday and the threat of more rain later made a large impact on the area’s sports schedule.

In District 12-5A baseball, Temple’s home game against Killeen Ellison was postponed from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. today at Hallford Field, while first-place Belton’s home showdown with second-place College Station A&M Consolidated was moved from Friday to 7 p.m. today at Tiger Field.

As a result, Belton’s scheduled home game against Round Rock Westwood at 1 p.m. today was canceled.

In 12-5A softball, Temple’s game at Copperas Cove on Friday night was pushed to 5 p.m. Monday, and Belton’s home game against Ellison on Friday was moved to 7 p.m. Monday. No sub-varsity games will be played Monday.

In college baseball, Mary Hardin-Baylor pushed its regular-season-ending home series against Howard Payne back one day. The Crusaders and the Yellow Jackets will try to play a doubleheader today and a single game Sunday at Red Murff Field in Belton. Game times will be determined this morning.

UMHB (19-15, 9-9 American Southwest Conference) will clinch an ASC Tournament berth if it sweeps the three-game series but will miss out if it gets swept. The Crusaders must finish ahead of Concordia Texas.

Temple College baseball coach Craig McMurtry said his first-place team still plans to host Weatherford in a conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. today, though it could be moved to Sunday afternoon at Danny Scott Sports Complex if the field is too wet.

The Leopards (32-12, 16-6) own a two-game lead in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.

In college softball, first-place TC’s doubleheader against rival McLennan in Waco was moved from today to 1 p.m. Monday, and UMHB’s two doubleheaders against Texas Lutheran in Seguin were pushed from Friday and today to Sunday (1 p.m.) and Monday (2 p.m.). The Crusaders (17-15, 10-6 ASC) have moved into third place in the ASC’s West Division by winning eight straight games.

Among the other high school baseball games that have been rescheduled are Salado at second-ranked Rogers to 7 p.m. Monday, Troy’s home duel with Clifton to 7 p.m. Monday, and Granger’s home battle with Thorndale to 7 p.m. today.
