Uncle Sam will be joining the festivities at this year’s children’s parade in the Temple Historic District.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. on the corner of North Ninth Street and French Street, with children marching north toward Nugent.

“At the end, we have stuff like cotton candy and lemonade for the kids,” said Shana Jeter, president of the Temple Historic Preservation League.

Christina Marshall, parade chair, said last year they provided one platter of pigs in a blanket, one platter of cupcakes and one platter of cookies.

“This year, I’m going to do five platters because the food went so fast,” Marshall said.

Marshall said the refreshments provided have all been donated.

“We had about $60 in donation cards from H-E-B, Target donated bottled water and Chick-Fil-A donated enough lemonade for about 200 cups and some water,” she said.

She also said one of the families from the Historic District will make cotton candy.

The parade, which Marshall says has been going on for more than 20 years, is made up of decorated bikes, strollers, wagons and scooters. She said motorized vehicles of any kind are not allowed in the parade.

“It really is a traditional hometown gathering,” Jeter said. “People from all over town are invited. People who used to live on the northside or grew up on the northside still drive to come participate.”

This year, the parade will include a police escort, a fire truck, an old-fashioned fire truck and Uncle Sam.

“Uncle Sam is going to lead the parade dressed in full costume,” Jeter said.

Marshall encourages people to come join the parade dressed in their red, white and blue.
