Lucky dog: House fire survivor finds a home

Anthony Putzeys, 27, of Temple looks down at his new companion. He hasn’t named the puppy yet, but is considering Blaze or Smokey because it was rescued from a burning house Sunday night. A new home was found for a puppy abandoned in a house that caught fire last Sunday.

The Temple Animal Shelter handed over the border collie mix to a new Temple resident. Anthony Putzeys, 27, moved to Temple from California.

Staff at the shelter said they had received about 100 calls asking about the puppy.

On Thursday she bounded out into the visiting area of the shelter to get pats from anyone remotely interested and play with a sheltie-mix that was awaiting a new owner.

Apart from a tiny patch of fleas on the back of her neck, and an oversized belly, probably due to common puppy worms, Dawn Heartman, volunteer coordinator at the Temple Animal Shelter, said she was in good health.

After treatment the puppy was ready for a new home.

On Friday morning her new forever home was found.

Putzeys hadn’t thought of a name but said, “Given the circumstances, maybe Blaze or Smokey.” Whatever the name, the dog and new owner left the shelter happy.

Dogs remain in the shelter for three days to give the owners a chance to find them, said Walter Hertzel, Animal Services supervisor.

The tenants of a duplex that burned early Sunday had just moved out, leaving the 8-week-old mix behind.

The pup was rescued when 15-year-old Hailiegh Sanchez heard the puppy’s cries. Hailiegh and a friend went to the door of the house and took the puppy out before heavy smoke and flames took over the back of the residence in the 300 block of South Sixth Street.

Temple Animal Shelter, 620 Mama Dog Circle, is a limited-kill shelter and always has an array of animals to suit any household.
