Temple native Hazle 10th in javelin qualifying round at world meet

BERLIN - Mike Hazle’s performance Friday at the track and field world championships was an improvement of 6 meters over his effort at the Beijing Olympics last year.

Unfortunately for the Temple native and professional javelin thrower, he needed to be another meter better.

Hazle had a top throw of 78.17 Friday morning, finishing 10th in the qualifying round and coming up about 1½ meters short of the sixth and final spot for the finals.

Japan’s Yukifumi Murakami had the top qualifying mark of 83.10, and Finland’s Tero Jarvenpaa secured the last spot in the finals at 79.48.

Hazle, who didn’t reach the 73-meter mark in Beijing, also fell just short of securing a spot in the season’s final two Golden League meets.

The top eight finishers at the world championships earned berths in the year’s final two big meets, and Hazle’s mark measured .29 meters less than that of eight-place finisher Csongor Oltean of Hungary.
