THRALL - Moody’s Ricky Siler hauled in a 57-yard touchdown pass from Nate Wilburn with four minutes remaining and Thrall missed a 25-yard field goal with less than 10 seconds left as the Bearcats escaped with a 19-18 season-opening victory over the Tigers on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Walter Hammond rushed for 111 yards, Wilburn had a 39-yard TD run and offensive lineman Justin Olson fell on a Hammond fumble in the end zone for a touchdown as Moody pushed its winning streak to three.

Troy 33, Whitney 8

WHITNEY - The Troy Trojans did all of their damage on the ground in a blowout of the Whitney Wildcats.

Troy, which didn’t attempt a pass, got 111 rushing yards and a touchdown from Roy Freeman to go with 85 yards and three scores from Brode Farmer.

Crawford 49, Jarrell 7

JARRELL - The Crawford Pirates dominated from the outset in a victory over the Jarrell Cougars. The loss ruined the debut of Jarrell coach Guillermo Gonzales.

Jarrell spoiled the shutout bid with a 10-yard scoring run from Clayton Kovar in the third quarter.

Florence 35, Bruceville-Eddy 20

FLORENCE - Four Bruceville-Eddy fumbles spoiled the coaching debut of coach Chris Lancaster in the Eagles’ loss to Florence.

The Eagles took a first-quarter lead when Logan Pratt scored from the 3, but the Buffaloes roared back to take a 21-6 lead at the half.

Copperas Cove 65, San Angelo Central 6

COPPERAS COVE - Brandin Byrd and Brelan Chancellor turned in 100-yard rushing performances to fuel Copperas Cove’s rout of the San Angelo Central Bobcats.

Byrd ran for 131 yards, including touchdown jaunts of 36 and 23 yards. Chancellor finished with 115 yards and two scores on just seven carries.

Lampasas 21, Manor 14

LAMPASAS - It was a successful season opener for Lampasas as the Badgers beat the Manor Mustangs to win their debut with coach Joey McQueen and break a 20-game losing streak that dated to 2007.

Rockdale 42, Llano 20

LLANO - The Rockdale Tigers just a balanced attack that produced 190 rushing yards and 207 through the air to dispose of the Llano Yellowjackets.

Daniel Brooks had an 89-yard touchdown run that was part of a 28-point second-quarter outburst for the Tigers. Joe Sanders passed for 158 yards and one score, and he caught a 49-yard TD toss from Tyler Wright.

Mexia 47, Gatesville 25

MEXIA - The Mexia Black Cats proved to be bad luck for the Gatesville Hornets.

Mexia’s Trae Davis rushed for 115 yards on just eight carries and scored two touchdowns. His performance eclipsed that of Gatesville’s Kevin Clarke, who rushed 24 times for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Bartlett 15, Austin St. Andrew’s 13

BARTLETT - The Bartlett Bulldogs got their season off a winning start by scraping past Austin St. Andrew’s.

Quarterback Gabriel Gadison ran for a 33-yard touchdown to end the first quarter and added a 3-yard TD rush early in the second quarter.

Andrew Brown’s touchdown catch from Will Temple with 6½ minutes left in the game cut the Crusaders’ deficit to 15-13, but their attempt for a tying two-point pass was denied.

Johnson City LBJ 36, Granger 8

JOHNSON CITY - Granger gave up big plays early in digging a 30-0 hole by halftime and never got out of it as the Lions lost their season opener at Johnson City LBJ.

Quarterback Jaron Davis paced Granger with 71 rushing yards and Andrew Aleman scored the Lions’ lone touchdown on a 9-yard run in the third quarter. Granger completed only two of its 13 pass attempts, lost two fumbles and had eight penalties.

Itasca 67, Holland 13

ITASCA - Holland matched Itasca for the opening minutes. After that, though, it was all Wampus Cats.

Chance Brantner’s 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and 75-yard scoring run pulled Holland even at 13-all before Itasca pulled away. Brantner had 236 yards on 18 carries.

Milano 33, Waco Texas Christian 26

WACO - The Milano Eagles made their debut with coach Craig Jentsch a winning one as they outscored host Waco Texas Christian. Milano, which was pushed this time by a squad it controlled 27-0 in 2008, will play at De Leon next Friday.

Penelope 51, Central Texas Christian 0

The Penelope Wolverines put a quick end to Central Texas Christian’s season opener, which was halted at halftime because of the six-man mercy rule.

The Lions mustered a meager 25 total yards. The Wolverines rolled to 220.

Holy Trinity Catholic 50, Waco Parkview Christian 44

The Holy Trinity Catholic Celtics scored 15 fourth-quarter points to get past the Waco Parkview Christian Pacers in six-man game.

Jacob Daheim passed for 211 yards and six scores for the Celtics. Chris Watson hauled in three TD catches.
