Mike Cockerill sandwiched a pair of late touchdown runs around a successful onside kick, and Sam Goodnight intercepted a pass in the closing seconds to cap Holland’s 34-33, come-from-behind victory over the Elgin junior varsity Thursday night at Hornet Field.
The Hornets (1-1), who trailed 26-0 at halftime, were down 33-13 late in the third quarter before rallying.
Cockerill hit Goodnight with a 7-yard TD pass in the final minute of the third, then ran in from 5 yards out with 4:45 remaining in the game. After Goodnight recovered the ensuing onside kick, Cockerill added another 5-yard scoring run with 1:59 to go. Goodnight’s interception of Elgin’s only pass attempt came with 29 seconds left at the Holland 10-yard line.
Cockerill rushed for 141 yards and passed for 146, finding Goodnight five times for 101 yards.
Despite having zero passing yards, Elgin outgained Holland by rushing for 413 yards.
