Five-year-old hit by car on the way to bus stop

Temple police officers investigate the scene where a five-year-old girl was hit by an SUV at about 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. The accident happened on Adams Avenue at 20th Street. The girl's backpack shows where she was hit.
A five-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by an SUV while crossing Adams Avenue at about 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Alyson Moreno, 5, of Temple was walking with several other children, crossing at 20th Street, headed to a bus stop.

"She was only five years old, so she was moving a little slower," said Sgt. Brad Hunt, public information officer for the Temple Police Department.

A 2002 green SUV was traveling westbound on Adams when the driver hit the child, dragging her about 60 yards before coming to a stop.

"Apparently, the driver did not see her at all," Hunt said.

The girl had severe head and facial injuries, as well as injuries to her lower extremities, he said. She was transported to Scott & White Memorial Hospital where she is being treated.

The children attend Hector P. Garcia Elementary School.

There are no charges at this time and the police department's reconstruction team will consider whether speeding or another violation contributed to the accident, or "whether it was just dark and a matter of not being seen," Hunt said.

Traffic was re-directed on Adams Avenue for about two hours Tuesday morning as officers investigated the scene.
