Temple girl struck by SUV; child was crossing street for bus stop

Sgt. Sean Childress with the Temple Police Department looks at the backpack of Alyson Moreno in the middle of Texas 53 after she was struck by an SUV on Tuesday morning. Her backpack indicates where she was hit on East Adams Avenue at about 7 a.m. She was taken to Scott & White Memorial Hospital with what officials called life-threatening injuries. A 5-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by an SUV while crossing East Adams Avenue on her way to a bus stop at about 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Alyson Moreno of Temple was walking with several other children to get to the stop at North 20th Street and East Barton Avenue when she was struck by a 2002 Ford Explorer.

"She was only 5 years old, so she was moving a little slower," said Sgt. Brad Hunt, public information officer for the Temple Police Department.

The SUV was traveling west on Adams when the child was hit and dragged about 60 yards before the vehicle came to a stop.

"Apparently, the driver did not see her at all," Hunt said.

Moreno had severe head and facial injuries, as well as injuries to her upper body and lower extremities, he said. She was taken to Scott & White Memorial Hospital, where she was in the intensive care unit as of Tuesday afternoon, Hunt said. The driver of the SUV was not injured.

The children are students at Hector P. Garcia Elementary School. No other children were hurt in the accident.

Temple Independent School District staff members were dispatched to Garcia and to Scott & White to provide support to students, staff and family members, according to a press release from Regina Corley, TISD spokeswoman. No other information was available from the school district.

The children cross Adams Avenue, which is also Texas 53, every morning at North 20th Street, Hunt said. There is no crosswalk and no crossing guard at the site, he said. The school district does employ crossing guards, but generally they are located closer to school campuses, he said, and it's up to the schools to provide the guards.

There are no charges at this time and the police department's Traffic Reconstruction Team will consider whether speeding or another violation contributed to the accident, or "whether it was just dark and a matter of not being seen," Hunt said.

Westbound traffic on Adams Avenue was redirected for more than two hours while investigators worked the scene.

Temple Fire & Rescue also responded to the accident.
