Brenham Christian overpowers CTCS; depleted Lions give up 287 rushing yards to D-II No. 1 Eagles

On a night when Off - the mosquito repelent - was the most-effective defense and there was nearly as much swatting as clapping, Brenham Christian stung Central Texas Christian School 68-22 in non-district play Friday night at Frazee Field.

The visiting Eagles - ranked No. 1 in TAPPS Division II - combined a strong running game with the Lions' health problems to improve their record to 4-0.

Trailing 46-22 at the half, CTCS (1-3) was forced to come out in the second half without senior running back Jeremiah Bergert and senior quarterback Taylor Truitt.

Bergert suffered a sprained ankle attempting to make a tackle with 12 seconds remaining in the first half and Truitt had to withdraw from combat because of illness.

With two of the Lions' top performers on the shelf, the game came to an end under the 45-point mercy rule with 4:49 remaining in the third period.

Brenham Christian only had the ball for three plays in the shortened second half and scored on each one of them.

Ian Roskow - a 145-pound junior - scored on a 49-yard run, 215-pound Lonne Armstrong scored from 7 yards out after a 2-yard Lions punt and Roskow capped the scoring with a 14-yard run.

Roskow had four touchdowns and rushed 13 times for 233 of the Eagles' 383 total yards.

"We constantly tell our kids to think like champions and work like a team," said CTCS coach Jeremy Wentrcek, who saw his team trail 22-0 after the first quarter. "With injuries and sickness, circumstances haven't been in our favor lately. We will be a good football team when things even out. We have good athletes and good character."

Bergert, who was aided off the field and had his ankle wrapped and iced after the game, is expected to be back "in a few days." Truitt was fighting a sinus infection, according to Wentrcek.

Brenham Christian scored on seven consecutive possessions in the first half.

Roskow ran for 41 yards, Roy Dawson passed 5 yards to Stephen Ridgeway, and Travis Cole threw a 17-yard pass to Dylan Cole for the 22-0 lead.

CTCS scored the first of its three second-quarter touchdowns on a 1-yard sweep by Bergert and an extra-point kick by Truitt. However, Roskow canceled out the score on the next play with a 60-yard scoring burst.

The Lions and Eagles traded out scores twice more in the period. Bergert threw a 12-yard pass to Andrew Townsend, but five plays later Reagan Cameron scored for Brenham Christian on a 24-yard run.

On the third play after the kickoff, Bergert sprinted 42 yards for CTCS' final score. Dawson threw 59 yards to Travis Cole to make the score 46-22 at the half.

Despite playing just one half, Bergert led CTCS ground-gainers, rushing 13 times for 114 yards. He completed four of 12 passes for 51 yards. Travis Cole intercepted a Bergert pass to account for the only turnover in the contest.

For the game, CTCS - the sixth-ranked team in TAPPS Division I - finished with 188 total yards.

However, the mosquitos were claiming a one-sided victory over the spectators.
