Officer Patrick McElroy of the Department of Public Safety said that as of 11:15 a.m., I-35 would be shut down several hours while DPS officers investigated the scene of the wreck.
The highway was opened again about 2 p.m.
Initial reports from DPS officials indicate that a military style Humvee was traveling southbound on I-35 when it became airborne and flew over the dividers and into a passenger car, then into an 18-wheeler that, in turn, collided with a truck towing a SUV on a flatbed trailer.
In all, three people were killed, and at least two others were treated on the scene. The cause of the wreck is still under investigation by DPS.
Troy Police are helping with the investigation. Temple Fire and Rescue was also called to the scene due to a fuel leak related to the incident.
