Local residents participate in National Life Chain event

The rain stopped just in time for dozens of people from all walks of life to assemble together to form what they called a life chain Sunday, silently protesting abortion.

About 50 demonstrators from toddlers to senior citizens joined together on the sidewalk in front of the mall in Temple holding signs that read "Abortion Kills Children" and "Abortion Hurts Women" in participation of the National Life Chain on Sunday.

Milton Hensley of Temple organized the event after learning about it six weeks ago.

"I'm doing this because someone has to be the protector of the children," he said. "If some person who is thinking about abortion sees us, sees someone who cares for them and their baby, maybe they will realize it is not the thing to do."

Passers-by waved, gave the thumbs up and honked their horns in support of the demonstrators. Some used their camera phones to snap a photo of the chain.

Curiosity got the better of Wilbloun Wiecker, who was dropping his wife off at the mall to shop when the protestors caught his eye. Wiecker soon grabbed a sign and joined the chain saying, "I'm glad to see them doing this. The little people have to protest to get the higher ups' attention."

Cindy Woodson brought her 13-year-old daughter, Paige, with her to support the movement. Woodson adopted Paige and her sister, Claire.

Woodson said she is an anti-abortion supporter because she knows how difficult it is to adopt a baby locally. "There are more parents waiting for a child than there are children available. There is a shortage in America," she said.

One woman's sign stood out from the rest. It was a sign she brought from home that read, "I Regret My Abortion." That sign belongs to Molly White who lobbies for anti-abortion causes, teaches abortion education and ministers to others.

White struggles with two abortions she had when she was in her 20s saying a doctor convinced her it was her best option.

"I was told that at eight weeks it wasn't a baby yet - although it had arms and legs and a body - that my life would be back to normal," she said.

"It was the most incredibly painful procedure I've ever had. I was never the same again," White said.

"I don't want any woman to have to go through this. I want them to know there is help," White said.

National Life Chain has been around for more than 20 years and focuses on dedicating one hour of prayer for the nation and for those in crisis situations as participants stand side-by-side to let their position against abortion known to the public.
