UMHB to host "Strike Out Breast Cancer" on Saturday
BELTON - The Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team will host a "Strike Out Breast Cancer" event at noon Saturday at Dee Dillon Field. UMHB will take on Our Lady of the Lake for a doubleheader, with all proceeds going to the Cancer Research Institute at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.
The Lady Crusaders will wear specially designed pink uniforms and T-shirts will be sold. Ticket prices will be $3 for adults and $2 for children ages 5 and up. Also, donations will be taken for every strikeout in odd-numbered innings.
Breast cancer survivors Donna Shipp - wife of UMHB vice-president for athletics Ben Shipp - and UMHB women's golf coach Darla Kirby will throw out ceremonial first pitches prior to the opening game. Other breast cancer survivors also will be recognized before the games.
"Breast cancer seems to affect so many people and so many families locally," Lady Crusaders softball coach Kasey Blomquist said. "The team thought this might be a good way to bring attention to Cancer Awareness Month. Now we hope the community and our fans will come out and support the cause."
