Salado bridges reopened after brief closings

SALADO - Five flooded bridges here were all reopened by Wednesday after being covered in up to 3 feet of water.

Three closed bridges were near Mill Creek while two were on Interstate 35 access roads.

The crossings should be in the clear for the time being, as blue skies are expected to follow a cold front coming through the area today, said Dennis Cavanaugh, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. The high humidity levels in recent days have been due to a warm front moving north accompanied by low clouds from the Gulf.

Temple has received more than 3 inches of rain since Friday, said Troy Marshall, also with the NWS.

The moisture got the best of some streams and creeks near Salado, which ran over five bridges on Tuesday, Charles Young, Salado fire chief, said.

The South Ridge and Chisholm Trail bridges in Mill Creek were covered by two to three feet of water, Young said. The closures cut off residents' access from the north side of the subdivision to the south until being reopened Wednesday morning.

The Smith Bluff bridge east of Mill Creek also was topped by between two and three feet of water but drained quickly, he said.

Along I-35, 1½ feet of water covered two access road bridges, he said. Both were open Tuesday afternoon.

Water from Salado Creek rose to within three feet of the Main Street, he said, but never covered the bridge that was battered by floodwaters in September.

"We're just trying to dry out," Young added.
