AREA ROUNDUP: Tem-Cats sweep Heights, remain third in 12-5A; Belton swept at Cove

Temple swept Harker Heights 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 on Friday night at Wildcat Gym to remain in third place in District 12-5A.

Thanks to Belton's loss to second-place Copperas Cove, the Tem-Cats are tied for 12-5A's final playoff spot with Bryan.

Loryn Goodwin had a team-high 10 kills and three aces, Emily Vasek added 11 digs and 25 assists and Kaitlin Muniz had three aces.

"We played better (than we did Tuesday against Harker Heights)," Temple coach Susie Hughlett said. "Nex week is a big week. We have to keep our focus."

The Tem-Cats (20-17, 7-4 12-5A) host No. 7-ranked College Station A&M Consolidated on Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

Belton swept by Coppperas Cove, falls to fifth in 12-5A

COPPERAS COVE - Belton stuck with Copperas Cove but couldn't string together plays to get over the top as the Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Bulldawgs 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 on Friday night.

Belton (12-23, 6-5 District 12-5A) came into the day as part of a three-way tie for third in the district standings and couldn't make up ground on second-place Cove (28-8, 8-3) and fell to fifth place.

"We were ahead some in the first two games, but we never showed any heart or fight," Lady Tigers coach Justeen Patton said. "We made a short rally in the third game but never got going enough to win it."

Grace Weaver had 20 kills and 15 digs for Belton, which got 32 assists from Brooke Malcik and 10 digs from Becky Calahan.

Belton boys beat A&M Consolidated

BELTON - Belton's Kyle Burt was first in two events and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team and two other teammates claimed individual titles as the Tigers beat defending District 12-5A champion A&M Consolidated in a Friday night duel.

Burt won titles in the 200 freestyle (1:49.68) and 500 freestyle (4:59.49). Also for Belton, Trey Falsone won the 50 freestyle (23.64), Mike Presta was first in the 100 butterfly (58.33). The winning relay team of Burt, Robert Soliz, Jason Ellis and Mitch Anderson was first in 1:37.51.

For the Belton girls, Samantha Horton won the 200 individual medley in 2:24.93 as Belton finished 96 points beind A&M Consolidated.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

UMHB falls to Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE - Mary Hardin-Baylor fell to Hardin-Simmons 25-13, 25-18, 25-12 to begin the American Southwest Conference Cross-Over Tournament on Friday night.

Christina Miller had eight kills for the Lady Crusaders (7-21, 4-8 ASC), who got 12 assists from Kayla Marzean and eight digs from Erin Maenius but couldn't overcome the Cowgirls (14-5, 11-2).

UMHB continues tournament play today with matches against Howard Payne and McMurry.
