Census Bureau Web site provides data on counties

Bell County ranks 221st among U.S. counties in terms of population, according to new data posted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The bureau just released its latest version of USA Counties, a Web site that lists hundreds of facts about Bell and other similar geographic areas.

The site - http://censtats. census.gov/usa/usa.shtml - is for researchers and trivia buffs.

"Information in USA Counties is derived from the following general topics: age, agriculture, ancestry, banking, building permits, business patterns, crime, earnings, education, elections, employment, government, health, households, housing, income, labor force, manufactures, population, poverty, retail trade, social programs, veterans, vital statistics, water use and wholesale trade," the bureau says.

But some of the information is not up-to-date. Some is from the 2000 census of the country's population, for example.

Other material is more current. The number of Social Security benefit recipients, 35,135, is from 2008 reports.

Bell County data can be compared to the same data for all other counties in most cases.
