Census, other data help build a profile of the area's needy

New data on poverty in Central Texas may provide less than an accurate picture of the needy, according to just-released reports.

Officially, about 11 percent of all Bell County families and 14 percent of individuals live below the federal poverty threshold. That's lower than for the state.

However, children and families headed by single women fare far worse, even using the official Census Bureau data released this fall.
