Strong north winds

Those extra blankets that have been in and out of cupboards lately may have the chance to stay out for a while, with temperatures in the area starting to drop.

"We had a cold front, or as we call it here in Texas, a norther, came rolling in today with strong north winds bringing in some much cooler weather," Andy Andersen KCEN-DT chief meteorologist, said.

The front came down from Alaska and Western Canada, and should be coming in continually, Andersen said.

"This is just the beginning of the season for us," he said. "Right now we are in a good pattern that is bringing these storms in here and giving us a chance of rain and bringing cooler weather in."

Thursday's official rain totals from the Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport in Temple totaled just over half an inch. While residents in other areas of town said it seemed like more, others didn't even get a sprinkle.

Josie Roseling lives on the north side of town but walks with her mother, Ava Petersen, from the south end of town.

"Since the weather is cooler we head out at about 9 o'clock now and choose a park to walk in," Roseling said.

"This morning it was raining so I called mom, who lives near Sleepyhollow in the south, and she said not a drop had fallen," she said. "I've seen that a lot in Temple. Sometimes you can leave the house and it's dry and walk for five minutes, turn a corner and it's raining."

Thursday night saw a lot more jackets and coats being worn around shopping areas.

Jamina Black, who lives on the east side of town, said this was the first day she had needed to wear a jacket but only after lunch.

"I took the children to the bus stop, went home and did some cleaning and had to take my sweater off because I was hot. I sat outside and had my coffee in the sun and it was beautiful in a T-shirt. About 30 minutes later when I went out, the wind was blowing right through me. I put my jacket on and I don't think I'll be taking it off during the day from now on," Black said.

"This is the time of year when you have to send the kids to school in layers, and usually one of those layers gets lost. We are out tonight because my daughter lost her jacket so we are buying a new one."

The National Weather Service gave Temple a 50 percent chance of rain overnight with a low of 50 degrees and wind gusts of 20 mph.

The high for Thursday was 81 degrees at 11:55 a.m. before dropping continuously throughout the afternoon to 59 at 8:35 p.m.

Today, there is a 40 percent chance of rain.

Those showers and thunderstorms are forecast mainly before 1 p.m. The day will remain cloudy with a high near 63 degrees.

Winds from the north-northwest will blow at around 5 mph before calming.

Tonight's low was forecast for 46.

Saturday will be sunny with a high near 71, the evening will be mostly clear with a low around 46 degrees.

Sunday the mercury will rise to near 75 degrees during the day.
