TC, UMHB competing in the name of charity

Clint Bittenbinder/Telegram Amanda Burkhart of Johnson Brothers, right, hands Gordon Fisher of Wilsonart garage sale items for him to load into a truck on Wednesday. The United Way of Central Texas community-wide garage sale will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bell County Expo Center on Saturday.

"The challenge is pretty simple - beat UMHB," said Danette Toone, Temple College vice president of academic and community initiatives. Toone is referring to a challenge between Temple College and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor United Way of Central Texas campaigns.

The United Way of Central Texas hopes to raise $1.7 million this year, which will help fund 28 different health and human services agencies.

Both TC and UMHB are asking staff to donate $1 a week to the United Way.
