Area volleyball playoffs: Salado upset by Navarro in five; Rogers swept by Poth; Gatesville advances

BASTROP - The No. 15-ranked Salado Lady Eagles had two match points but couldn't finish off Geronimo Navarro in a 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 18-16 loss in a Class 2A area-round volleyball playoff match on Thursday night.

Salado (30-7), the District 25-2A co-champion with Rogers and Lago Vista, led 14-12 in Game 5 but errors helped Navarro rally for the victory.

"They were a really good defensive team," Lady Eagles coach Bree Holz-Gonzales said. "They dug everything up - outside, middle shots, roll shots, back-row shots."

Hadley Joiner led Salado with 16 kills and 37 digs. Brennan Boydstun had 50 assists and 19 digs and Camryn Bintz had 13 kills and 26 digs.

A year after enjoying the best season in school history while advancing to the Region IV final, Salado's early exit should serve as motivation for next season.

"The silver lining is we're not losing any seniors," Holz-Gonzales said.

Rogers ousted by powerhouse Poth

LOCKHART - The No. 25 Rogers Lady Eagles were swept by perennial powerhouse and sixth-ranked Poth in a Class 2A area-round playoff match.

Rogers, which shared the 25-2A title, finished the season at 31-8.

Gatesville gets by Vernon

MINERAL WELLS - No. 15 Gatesville scraped past Vernon 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24 in a Class 3A area-round playoff match.

The Lady Hornets (28-13), District 7-3A champions, will play the winner of No. 5 Decatur and No. 23 Burnet in the regional quarterfinals next Monday or Tuesday.

Glynna Johnson had 21 kills and nine blocks, Kaitlin Poe had 39 assists and Shelby Watson had 12 kills.
