It's Rogers, again: Hard-charging Eagles beat rival Salado 42-14, capture share of 25-2A title

ROGERS - There was the traditional ice-water bath but that was pretty much the extent of Rogers' celebration.

Then again, when you've won eight district titles in the last 10 years - including back-to-back District 25-2A crowns after Friday night's 42-14 win over Salado at Merk Field - some things just become routine.

But even the expected outcomes are still worth enjoying and this was a win the Eagles certainly savored.

"We're district champs," linebacker Jacolby Brown said, "and there's more to come."

Rogers (8-2 overall, 5-1 25-2A) entered Friday night simply needing a win to clinch a playoff spot, a share of the district title with Lago Vista and the top seed in the Class 2A Division II playoffs. An opponent for a bi-district game wasn't known late Friday night.

After scoring 28 straight points to open the second half, the fourth quarter became more of a coronation and less of a battle, the type the Eagles had fought through to get to this point yet again.

And when it ended, Rogers coach Jeff Walker got doused with a chilly bucket of water. Aside from that celebration, it was another dominating, workman-like effort on both sides.

"We're pretty good when we refuse to lose," Walker said.

Salado (3-7, 3-3) entered with a similar scenario, needing a win by four points or more to secure a playoff berth. But needing to score to keep pace in the second half, the Eagles couldn't seem to get their defense back to the sideline.

"We couldn't get them off the field at times," Salado coach Jeff Cheatham said. "When you can't get on the field, you can't score. That's been the prescription for them all year long; they've been able to do that."
