FORT HOOD - Gunfire broke out in the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, leaving 12 dead and 31 wounded.

The center is where deploying soldiers go for last-minute medical checkups and dental treatments before leaving for overseas.

The post was locked down immediately, keeping vehicles from leaving or entering the post and closing every building. Area schools were locked down.

The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded and alive and in stable condition under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, commander of III Corps and Fort Hood.
