Homeowners outnumber renters at polls

Homeowners tend to vote in greater numbers than renters, according to U.S. Census data, and that could be important to the passage of about one-half of the proposed changes to the state constitution on Tuesday's ballot.

Newly released Census information shows that there are far more owners than renters in Bell County, as well as in Texas.

Home tenure also has an impact on voting. Those who live in a home tend to vote, while renters do not. In the 2008 general election, for example, more than 75 percent of registered voters who had lived in their homes for five years or more did, in fact vote. For renters, the percentage was closer to 60 percent. Those figures come from the Census Bureau, as well.
