Liturgical leaders in Temple are learning to pry churches from their musical ruts over the next two years.

The Texas Leadership Program for Musicians is teaching worship leaders to revamp their ministries and help congregations know God through worship, coordinator Marsha Seale of Kingwood said.

The state effort is part of a national program to help musicians in small churches that was started by the Episcopal Church USA in 1988 and joined by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church of America and the United Church of Christ.

First Lutheran Church in Temple will host 10 meetings this year. Seven students are enrolled in the church music certification program, with additional musicians auditing the class.
