Proud to be an American: Flag sales up around town

Kay Guedea places one of many flags on her porch in the 500 block of North Ninth Street. “I bought about 20 flags this year and next year I’m sure I’ll get more,” she said. “It’s a great honor. It’s a grand ol’ flag and many have died to protect it.” (Scott Gaulin/Telegram)
People in Temple are not timid about displaying their patriotism and local businesses are more than willing to help them.

A quick survey of a few Temple retailers indicates American flags, flag paraphernalia and anything red, white and blue are available for purchase.

Kay Guedea, a resident in Temple’s Historic District, was at Michael’s Arts and Crafts on Thursday picking up a few flags to adorn her potted plants, rejecting one that didn’t have a finial.

Less is more is not part of Guedea’s philosophy on decorating for Independence Day.

“I have bunting around the front porch and the balconies,” she said. “Everywhere I can put a flag that will show, I’m going to put it. If I could find more places to put flags, I would.”

Guedea is also not shy about professing her love of country.

“I love America, I love the flag and I love the boys who fight for it,” she said, speaking of Iraq. “I don’t like war any better than anybody else, but that war was going to be here or there and I did not want it here.”

No doubt, she said, the United States is the land of the free because of the brave.

Those who have yet to stock up on their July Fourth decorations are in luck because the selection is plentiful.

Michael’s also has appropriately decorated balloons, flag confetti, glitter, stickers and garlands.

Hobby Lobby has a section full of the patriotic gear, ranging from headbands, leis and muffin cups to picnic baskets, figurines and picture frames.

At Card and Party Factory, flags have been selling at a steady clip since mid-June, said Laura Mejias, assistant manager.

“All sizes are selling,” Mejias said. “From the very smallest to the size that would go up on a flag pole.”

Flags are in demand not only on July Fourth, but also on Memorial Day, she said.

“Anything red, white and blue is popular,” Mejias said.
