John W. Sluder, 80, of Temple died Monday, Jan. 1, in a Temple nursing center.

MOODY -- La Dean Nichols, 89, of Moody died Monday, Jan. 1.

Velma Goddard

CAMERON -- Velma Johnson Goddard, 94, of Cameron died Monday, Jan. 1, in a Cameron hospital.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron with Barbara Dowdy officiating.

Mrs. Goddard, a retired legal secretary, was born in Leonard to Joseph and Mary Luola Pace Johnson. She was a member of the Cameron Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Goddard, in 1990.

Survivors are a daughter, Barbara Rogers Dowdy of Bellaire; two granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.

Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron is in charge of arrangements.

Clessie Dyer Culp

GATESVILLE -- Services for Clessie Dyer Culp, 96, of Gatesville will be at 2 p.m. today at Scott's Funeral Home in Gatesville with the Rev. J.W. Sellers officiating.

Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.

Mrs. Culp died Sunday, Dec. 31, in Clifton.

She was born in Coryell County to W.R. and Christine Franks. She taught school at Springhill, Whitehall, Jonesboro and Priddy for 40 years. She retired in 1974. She was a member of Jonesboro Methodist Church. She married Owen Dyer on March 6, 1930. He died in 1951. She married Earl Culp in 1962, and he died in 1983.

Survivors are a son, Billy Dyer of Jonesboro; a sister, Bobbie Brown of Hamilton; and a grandson.

Memorials may be made to Jonesboro Methodist Church or to any charity.

Oley Beard Jr.

GATESVILLE -- Services for Dr. Oley Beard Jr., 80, of Gatesville will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Gatesville.

Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.

Dr. Beard died Sunday, Dec. 31, in a Gatesville hospital.

He was born in Gatesville to Oley and Lillie Hackney Beard. He graduated from Gatesville High School and attended Baylor University for two years before becoming a Naval pilot during World War II.

He graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in 1949 and opened his practice in Gatesville in August of 1949. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gatesville where he served as an usher and a Sunday school teacher. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, a member of Gatesville Lions Club, a member of the Gatesville Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Airport Committee. He served on the board of directors of the Gatesville Country Club. He was a past master of the Gatesville Masonic Lodge 197 and past district deputy grand master of the 69th District of Texas.

He was a member of Texas Chiropractic Association, and served as president of District VIII for the terms of 1963-64 and 1964-65. He married Maxine Lovejoy on Nov. 6, 1944.

Survivors are his wife, Maxine Beard of Gatesville; a son, Steve Beard of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Linda Mathews of Gatesville; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Gatesville.

W.D. 'Dinky' Lam

GATESVILLE -- W.D. "Dinky" Lam, 71, of Flat died Monday, Jan. 1.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott's Funeral Home in Gatesville.

Burial will be in Flint Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

KILLEEN -- Ok Sun Seong, 71, of Killeen died Monday, Jan. 1, in a Temple hospital.

Mary Nell Thompson

LAMPASAS -- Mary Nell Thompson, 73, of Lometa died Monday, Jan. 1, at her home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dodson Funeral Home in Lampasas.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Cook Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery in Austin.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Enloe to Jess and Emma Lee Dial Blevins. She grew up in Cooper, where she graduated from high school. She studied music at the University of Texas at Austin.

She married Charles Thompson on Feb. 6, 1946, in Dallas. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker who loved to cook, garden, quilt, and study the Bible.

She was a member of the Lampasas Herb Society and the Nix Quilting Group. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ at the Lometa United Methodist church, where she was a member.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors are two sons, Charles Thompson Jr. and Mark Stephen Thompson, both of Austin; a daughter, Charlotte Math of Lampasas; a brother, Warren Blevins of Irving; a sister, Jessie Lee Wilson of Dallas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
