Rockdale tandem advances to final
COLLEGE STATION — Rockdale’s Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzales will get a chance to defend their Class 3A mixed doubles title after recording a pair of victories Thursday at the UIL Tennis State Championships.
The Whitsel/Gonzales tandem knocked off Jesse Gaut and Ashlee Wyatt of White Oak 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and cruised past Jake Billo and Barbara Cosper of Goliad by the same score in the semifinals.
Whitsel and Gonzales will face Austin Fairchild and Caryle Pfeister of Ingram Moore in the championship match at noon today on the Texas A&M campus.
Also Thursday, the Academy duo of Payton Lisenbe and Samuel Golovin lost 6-2, 6-0 to Jason Cabe of Jacob Clark of Brownfield in a 3A boys doubles quarterfinal.
In 2A competition, Moody’s Jacob Armida and Cody Stone won their boys doubles quarterfinal 6-0, 6-2 over Chase Bynum and Adrian Patterson of Linden-Kildare before falling to Mason’s Kyle Montoya and Slone Stultz 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. Moody’s Liz Perkins fell 6-0, 6-0 to Thorndale’s Landry Laywell in a girls singles quarterfinal.
UMHB women miss cut at national tournament
HOUSTON — Mary Hardin-Baylor posted a 327 on Thursday and was in 17th place after the third round, missing the cut at the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships.
The top 15 teams advanced to today’s final round, and the Lady Crusaders (332-328-327—987) were nine strokes back of 15th-place Transylvania (331-326-321—978) and 72 shots behind leader Williams (309-306-300—915) at Bay Oaks Country Club.
Olivia Robinson (87-79-76—242) paced UMHB and was in a tie for 55th in the individual standings, which were led by Emily Salamay (74-75-74—223) of Rhodes.
Cassidy Rawls (81-83-84—248), Victoria Gleghorn (86-80-84—250), Annie Hasselbach (82-88-83—253) and Jade Ming (83-86-84—253) completed the Lady Crusaders’ card.
